Suzuki Motorcycle VIN Decoder: GSX-R, Hayabusa, KingQuad
Decode a Suzuki motorcycle VIN with real NHTSA results for the GSX-8R, Hayabusa and DR650. Read the 49-state or California letter, plant code and KingQuad gaps.
A Suzuki motorcycle VIN decoder turns the 17-character frame number into the model, model year, engine size and factory. JS1EM13B3T7100001, for example, decodes as a 2026 GSX-8R with a 776 cc twin, built at Suzuki's Hamamatsu plant in Japan.
Each decode below is a real NHTSA vPIC result (data checked October 2026), matched against the VIN filings Suzuki Motor USA sent NHTSA for the 2023 and 2026 model years. To check your own bike, paste the VIN into our free VIN decoder.
| Suzuki | Example VIN | vPIC result |
|---|---|---|
| GSX-8R | JS1EM13B3T7100001 | 2026, 776 cc, 2 cylinders, Hamamatsu |
| Hayabusa | JS1EJ11B1P7100001 | 2023, 1340 cc, 4 cylinders |
| DR650S | JS1SP46D2T7100001 | 2026, 644 cc, 1 cylinder |
| Burgman 400 | JS1DU11J6T7100001 | 2026, 400 cc scooter |
| KingQuad ATV prefix | 5SAAK43A9P7100001 | 2023, Rome, Georgia, no model returned |
Which Suzuki prefixes appear on US bikes?
Suzuki's 2026 filing lists four prefixes for the US and Canada. JS1 covers motorcycles built in Japan, RFD covers Taiwan-built motorcycles and ATVs, 5SA covers ATVs built in the USA and LC6 covers motorcycles from Suzuki's Chinese partner. Every 2026 on-road model in the filing starts with JS1.
| WMI | Built by | Plant code (position 11) | Plant |
|---|---|---|---|
JS1 | Suzuki Motor Corporation | 7 | Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, Japan |
RFD | Tai Ling Motor Co. | 1 | Taoyuan, Taiwan |
5SA | Suzuki Manufacturing of America | 7 | Rome, Georgia, USA |
LC6 | Changzhou Haojue Suzuki Motorcycle | 1 | Changzhou, China |
The 2023 filing also listed MLC for Thai Suzuki, with serial numbers starting at 600001. Every other plant starts its serials at 100001. So a Suzuki with a 6 in position 12 likely came from Thailand, which is an easy cross-check against the prefix.
Note that plant code 7 means two different plants depending on the prefix. After JS1 it is Hamamatsu, and after 5SA it is Rome, Georgia. Always read position 11 together with positions 1 to 3.
What do Suzuki VIN positions 4 to 8 mean?
Positions 4 to 8 are Suzuki's model identifier. Suzuki does not split them into separate fields in its filing. Each model gets its own five-character code, such as EM13B for the GSX-8R or EJ11B for the Hayabusa. The engine number uses a different prefix, so on a Suzuki the two numbers do not share a code.
Here are five 2026 models from Suzuki's filing:
| Model | VIN positions 1-8 | Engine number prefix | Engine and power |
|---|---|---|---|
| GSX-8R | JS1EM13B | FRA1 | 776 cc twin, 81.8 hp |
| GSX-8S | JS1EM11B | FRA1 | 776 cc twin, 81.8 hp |
| SV650 ABS | JS1VP55B | P511 | 645 cc twin, 75.1 hp |
| DR650S | JS1SP46D | P409 | 644 cc single, 42.0 hp |
| Burgman 400 | JS1DU11J | K432 | 400 cc single, 28.8 hp |
The GSX-8R and GSX-8S differ in one character, 13 against 11, and share the FRA1 engine. That makes the VIN, not the engine number, the place to tell them apart. If someone sells a "GSX-8R" whose VIN reads EM11, the frame belongs to a GSX-8S.
The engine prefix is still worth checking. A GSX-8R engine number that does not start with FRA1 means the engine is not the one Suzuki fitted to that model. For the same check on other makes, see the Honda motorcycle VIN decoder, where the frame and engine codes do match.
How can a Suzuki VIN show a California model?
On many Suzuki models, position 8 tells you whether the bike was built to 49-state or 50-state (California) emissions rules. Suzuki's 2023 filing gives the Hayabusa a B for the 49-state version and a D for the 50-state version. vPIC returns the same result for both, so this is a detail you have to read yourself.
Examples from the 2023 filing:
| Model | 49-state | 50-state |
|---|---|---|
| Hayabusa | JS1EJ11B | JS1EJ11D |
| GSX-R1000R | JS1DM11H | JS1DM11M |
| V-Strom 650 | JS1C733B | JS1C733G |
| GSX-S1000 | JS1EK11B | JS1EK11D |
We decoded both Hayabusa versions. JS1EJ11B1P7100001 and JS1EJ11DXP7100001 came back the same way: a 2023 Hayabusa with 1340 cc and 4 cylinders, built in Hamamatsu. Nothing in the vPIC output says which one is the California bike.
This matters if you plan to register a used bike in California, which has its own emissions rules. Read position 8, find the model in Suzuki's filing on NHTSA's manufacturer site, and confirm which version you have. The letters change from model to model, so do not assume D always means California.
Why does a KingQuad VIN decode with less detail?
Suzuki's US-built ATVs, including the KingQuad, use the 5SA prefix from the Rome, Georgia plant. When we tested 5SA VINs, vPIC returned Suzuki, the model year and the plant, with error code 14. It did not return a model name or an engine size for any pattern we tried.
For example, 5SAAK43A9P7100001 decoded as Suzuki, 2023, Rome, Georgia, with error codes 0 and 14. Code 0 means the check digit is correct. Code 14 means vPIC could not decode some characters from Suzuki's submission. That is a gap in the database, not a problem with the ATV.
So for a KingQuad, a decoder can confirm that the VIN is valid, that Suzuki made it in Georgia and which year it is. For the exact model, look at the label on the frame, the title and the owner's manual, or give the VIN to a Suzuki dealer. The ATV VIN decoder guide covers what other ATV brands report in vPIC.
How do you verify a Suzuki VIN by hand?
Suzuki follows the same federal check-digit rule as every US-market maker. Under 49 CFR Part 565, letters become numbers, each position carries a fixed weight, and the weighted total is divided by 11. Position 9 holds the remainder, shown as X when it is 10, so one misread character usually breaks the match.
Worked example, JS1EM13B3T7100001. Letter values are J=1, S=2, E=5, M=4, B=2 and T=3.
| Position | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 10 | 11 | 12 | 13-16 | 17 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Character | J | S | 1 | E | M | 1 | 3 | B | T | 7 | 1 | 0000 | 1 |
| Value × weight | 1×8 | 2×7 | 1×6 | 5×5 | 4×4 | 1×3 | 3×2 | 2×10 | 3×9 | 7×8 | 1×7 | zeros | 1×2 |
| Product | 8 | 14 | 6 | 25 | 16 | 3 | 6 | 20 | 27 | 56 | 7 | 0 | 2 |
8 + 14 + 6 + 25 + 16 + 3 + 6 + 20 + 27 + 56 + 7 + 2 = 190
190 ÷ 11 = 17, remainder 3. Position 9 is 3, so the VIN is consistent.
One of our example VINs has an unusual check digit. The 50-state Hayabusa, JS1EJ11DXP7100001, has X in position 9 because its remainder is 10. That is normal and is not a typo. Position 10 is the year: P is 2023 and T is 2026. The VIN year chart lists the rest.

Frequently asked questions
How do I decode a Suzuki motorcycle VIN?
Enter all 17 characters in a decoder that uses NHTSA vPIC data. JS1 is Suzuki's Japan prefix, positions 4 to 8 name the model, position 10 is the model year and position 11 is the plant. A 7 after JS1 means the Hamamatsu plant in Japan.
What year is my Suzuki by VIN?
Read position 10. Suzuki's filings use P for 2023 and T for 2026, following the standard table, so R is 2024 and S is 2025. Our VIN year chart lists every letter.
Does the VIN show if my Suzuki is a California model?
On many models, yes. Suzuki's 2023 filing gives the Hayabusa a B in position 8 for the 49-state version and a D for the 50-state version. vPIC decodes both the same way, so compare position 8 with Suzuki's filing rather than the decoder output.
Where is the VIN on a Suzuki motorcycle?
On most Suzuki street bikes the VIN is stamped on the steering head of the frame, with a label nearby. The engine number is separate and is stamped on the crankcase. Your owner's manual shows the exact spot for your model.
Why does my KingQuad VIN not show a model?
Suzuki's US-built ATVs use the 5SA prefix. When we tested 5SA VINs in vPIC, the decoder returned Suzuki, the model year and the Rome, Georgia plant, but no model name. Use the title, the frame label or a Suzuki dealer to confirm the exact model.
