Maruti Suzuki sells more cars in India than anyone else, so a Maruti chassis number is the VIN most buyers end up checking at delivery or before a used-car payment. Enter it above and the decoder reads the parts of a Maruti VIN that follow a published pattern: the maker prefix, the model family, the model-year letter in position 10 and the month letter in position 12. Anything beyond that, especially the exact variant and the recorded Date of Manufacture, comes from Form 22 and the RC, not from the number alone.

MA3 and MBH: the two Maruti Suzuki prefixes

The first three characters are the World Manufacturer Identifier. Our table recognises two for Maruti Suzuki cars.

PrefixWhat the decoder showsWhere you see it
MA3Maruti Suzuki, India, carCars built at the Gurugram and Manesar plants in Haryana
MBHMaruti Suzuki, India, carCars built at the Suzuki Motor Gujarat plant in Hansalpur, which supplies Maruti
MBJToyota, India, carNot a Maruti prefix. Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Innova Hycross owners sometimes test it here

A Baleno can carry either MA3 or MBH because the model has been built in both Haryana and Gujarat. A Maruti VIN that starts with anything else is worth a second look before you go further.

Positions 4 to 9: Maruti model families by letter

Maruti does not publish a key to its descriptor section. The table lists the prefixes the decoder matches today. We built it from chassis numbers we have seen, not from a Maruti document, and real numbers often fall outside it. A 2011 Swift VIN posted by its owner, MA3FHEB1S00171145, starts with FHE. A number outside the table returns the maker and year without a family:

Positions 4 onwardModel family the decoder showsSegmentFuel options in that family
EWB11SBaleno or Wagon RHatchbackPetrol, CNG
EWB (other)Swift, Dzire or BalenoHatchback or sedanPetrol, CNG
EYBBrezza or FronxCompact SUVPetrol, CNG
EZBGrand Vitara or InvictoSUVStrong hybrid, petrol
ERBErtiga or XL6MPVPetrol, CNG
EJBJimnyFour-wheel-drive off-roaderPetrol

The result is a family, not a variant. EWB cannot separate a Swift VXi from a Swift ZXi+, and it cannot tell a CNG car from a petrol one. For the variant, read the invoice and the Form 22. If the family the decoder shows does not match the car in front of you, stop and ask the dealer to explain the chassis number in writing.

Maruti year letter (position 10) and month letter (position 12)

Position 10 is the model-year letter that ISO 3779 defines. Recent Maruti numbers follow it: R is 2024, S is 2025, T is 2026. Older ones may not. The 2011 Swift number above has a 0 in position 10, which is not a year letter. If position 10 is a digit, take the year from the RC. The full letter chart sits further down this page.

Position 12 is where the decoder reads the manufacturing month. The result sheet shows it under "Manufacturing month" using this table:

LetterMonthLetterMonth
AJanuaryGJuly
BFebruaryHAugust
CMarchJSeptember
DAprilKOctober
EMayLNovember
FJuneMDecember

Two cautions. Maruti has never published this table, and online guides disagree on whether Maruti uses position 11 or position 12 for the month, so treat the month as a clue rather than a certificate. The RC's "Date of Manufacture" field and the manufacturer's Form 22 are the records that count when you negotiate a discount on an old-stock car. Our Maruti manufacturing-date check walks through that paperwork.

Position 9 is not a check digit on Indian VINs. If the decoder shows a check-digit warning on a Maruti number, the warning does not apply. A missing character does.

Worked example: a Swift-family chassis number

Illustrative only: MA3EWB32SRCK12345 is made up and does not identify a real car.

CharactersPositionWhat the decoder shows
MA31 to 3Maruti Suzuki, India
EWB32S4 to 9Swift, Dzire or Baleno family, petrol or CNG
R102024 model year
C11Maker-defined, not decoded
K12October, shown as manufacturing month
1234513 to 17Production sequence

Read that result next to the car. If the car is a Swift, the family fits. If the RC says Date of Manufacture 10-2024, the month letter agrees with it. If the RC says 03-2024, trust the RC, and ask why the letter and the document differ before you accept the car.

Where Maruti stamps the chassis number

Maruti's VIN help page points to three places: the driver-side dashboard seen through the windscreen, the inside of the driver-side door frame, and a chassis stamp in the engine bay. The owner manuals for the Eeco and Tour V describe the same locations and note that the chassis number is the reference for registration and service.

Where to compareWhat to check
Windscreen plateAll 17 characters, photographed through the glass with the glare controlled
Door-frame labelThe same 17 characters. A label alone is not the final check
Engine-bay stampThe number impressed in metal. Use a torch, never scrape paint
Form 22, Form 20, invoice and RCChassis number and Date of Manufacture, read beside the car
Buyer comparing a Maruti-style windscreen VIN area with vehicle paperwork

Engine-bay stamp locations move between models and years. For a Swift, Baleno, Brezza or Ertiga, use that model's manual or ask an authorised workshop to show you rather than copying the Eeco location.

What the decoder cannot tell you about a Maruti

  • The variant. VXi, ZXi, Alpha and Zeta are not in the VIN. Read the invoice.
  • The colour. Maruti puts the colour code on the door-frame label, not in the VIN.
  • Registration, ownership and claims. The decoder reads structure. It does not search VAHAN, insurance or police records. The RC check guide covers the official route.
  • Whether a recall was completed. Maruti runs service campaigns by chassis number on its own site. Check there with the full number.

Before you accept a Maruti delivery

  1. Copy the chassis number from the car, not from the dealer's message.
  2. Decode it above and check that the family and year letter match the invoice.
  3. Compare the month letter with the Date of Manufacture on Form 22. A car built more than a few months before delivery is a discount conversation, and our old manufacturing date on a new car guide explains what is reasonable.
  4. Run the pre-delivery inspection checklist before you sign.

Anatomy of a VIN, character by character

Every position has a job, set by the ISO 3779 standard and U.S. federal rule 49 CFR Part 565. Tap a section to see what it encodes.

World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

The first character is the region or country of manufacture. The second is the manufacturer, and the third is usually the vehicle type or division. Low-volume makers (under 1,000 vehicles a year) use a 9 in position 3 and carry an extra code in positions 12–14.

Which cycle? On North American cars and light trucks, check position 7. If it's a number the vehicle is from 1980–2009, and if it's a letter it's from 2010–2039. The highlighted code is the current calendar year.

Questions, answered

Free Maruti Suzuki chassis number decoder. Read the MA3 prefix, model family, year letter and a month clue from the VIN, then confirm it on Form 22.

Can a Maruti Suzuki chassis number check prove that a car is genuine?

No. A decoder can flag a structural mismatch or return available vehicle data, but it cannot authenticate a VIN plate or certify that a metal chassis stamp has not been altered. Compare the physical vehicle with Form 22, the RC and seller records, then ask an authorised Maruti Suzuki workshop to inspect any doubtful marking.

Does an MA3, MBH or MBJ prefix confirm the exact Maruti model?

No. Maruti Suzuki's VIN-help page asks customers to enter chassis numbers beginning with MA3, MBH or MBJ in relevant campaigns, but a prefix alone does not confirm the model, trim or equipment. Use the complete VIN, the car and manufacturer paperwork together.

Can the 10th VIN character tell me my Maruti Suzuki's manufacturing month?

No. The BIS VIN layout places model year at position 10, not the exact assembly month. For the recorded month and year, check Form 22 before registration and the RC field named Date of Manufacture after registration.

Can this tool check RC details, ownership, accidents or insurance?

No. vindecode.pro decodes VIN structure and uses available NHTSA vPIC information. It does not access registration, owner, accident, insurance, finance, police, service or claim records. Treat those as separate checks through the appropriate official or provider process.

What should I do if the chassis stamp and RC do not match?

Stop the delivery, purchase or transfer until the mismatch is explained in writing. Photograph both entries, keep the Form 22 or Form 20 and invoice with them, and ask the dealer, recorded owner, manufacturer or registering authority to resolve the discrepancy before you proceed.

Can I use a Maruti VIN decoder to check whether recall work is complete?

No. A structural VIN decode cannot confirm completed recall or service-campaign work. Use Maruti Suzuki's official customer-information or authorised-workshop channel for campaign status, and retain the job card or written confirmation for any work carried out.
