Check Car Manufacturing Date by VIN or Chassis Number
Enter the 17-character VIN to decode its structure and model year, then compare it with the manufacturing month and year recorded in the vehicle papers.
A car manufacturing date check by VIN is a good first screen before delivery or a used-car purchase. It can decode the chassis number's structure and model year. It cannot, on its own, prove the exact month the car left the factory. For that, compare the VIN with the Date of Manufacture shown on the RC and the maker's sale and compliance papers.
That distinction matters. A car registered this year may have been built in the previous model year, and a single model-year code can recur in later VIN cycles. Use the result to ask the right question, then verify the recorded month and year before you pay a deposit or accept delivery.
Start with the full chassis number
Copy the complete 17-character VIN from the vehicle itself, then compare it character by character with the documents. The Bureau of Indian Standards explains the 17-character VIN structure: positions 1-3 are the WMI, positions 4-9 the vehicle descriptor section, and positions 10-17 the vehicle indicator section. ISO 3779 is the international standard for VIN content and structure.
| Where to look | What to compare | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Lower corner of the windscreen | Full VIN visible from outside | Glare, dirt, or a photo that cuts off the first characters |
| Door-jamb label or body/chassis stamp | Full VIN, plus any maker build label | A label is useful, but a physical stamp must not conflict with it |
| RC / smart-card RC | Chassis number and the Date of Manufacture field | Registration date is a different field |
| Form 22, Form 20, invoice and delivery papers | Chassis number, maker details and recorded timing | A dealer quotation or WhatsApp photo is not enough |
The RC format prescribed by Parivahan includes both Date of Manufacture (mm-yyyy) and chassis number. Its Form 23A is the useful record to compare after registration. For a new, unregistered car, Parivahan lists the manufacturer-issued Form 22 among its permanent-registration documents, while Form 20 has fields for both the month/year of manufacture and the chassis number.
Don't scrub, sand or repaint a chassis stamp to make it legible. Ask the dealer, recorded owner or an authorised service centre to show you the proper location for that model.
What this VIN manufacturing-date checker reads
Enter the entire VIN with no guessed characters. The tool reads the number's structure and uses NHTSA's vPIC database for available vehicle attributes. NHTSA says vPIC is populated from manufacturer information submitted through its Part 565 filings. A returned make, model or body class can help you see whether the number fits the car in front of you. A blank field means the data was not returned. It is not a reason to infer a trim, engine or build month.
The tenth character is commonly used as a model-year code. That is not the same thing as the exact manufacturing date. Under the current US VIN rule, NHTSA places model year at position 10 and separates the plant code and production sequence in later positions. Its VIN requirements also show why the character must be read in its applicable cycle, rather than treated as a one-time calendar code.
This page does not query registration, ownership, accident, insurance, odometer, finance, police, service or claim records. It also does not certify that a stamp, seller or document is genuine. If you need registration-related context, use the RC check guide. If you are checking a wider used-car story, read the vehicle-history check guide before treating any decoder result as a history report.
Worked example: use the VIN as a cross-check
Illustrative only: ABC12D3E4S5G67890 is made up. It is not a real VIN and will not identify a vehicle. The example shows what to compare, not a month-decoding formula.
| Item | Example result | What to do with it |
|---|---|---|
| VIN positions 1-3 | ABC | On a real number, the WMI should identify a manufacturer that makes the vehicle you are viewing. |
| VIN position 10 | S | The checker may map this to a model year in the relevant cycle. Treat it as model year, not the build month. |
| VIN position 12 | G | This is a maker-defined character. Do not assume one universal month meaning for it. |
| RC Date of Manufacture | 08-2025 | This is the month and year to compare with the deal, invoice and VIN. |
| Invoice / Form 20 | Matching chassis number and 08-2025 | If it matches the RC and physical stamp, retain copies for your file. |
In this example, a result that identifies model year 2025 sits comfortably beside an August 2025 manufacturing entry. But a different combination is not automatically wrong. A model year can lead or differ from the assembly calendar year. What needs explaining is a conflict between the physical VIN and the paperwork, or a date that changes from one official document to another.

Common mistakes when reading a manufacturing date
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Using only the last 5-8 characters from an advert or portal | Get the full 17-character VIN from the car and compare it in person. A suffix cannot support a full structural decode. |
| Treating the 10th character as the exact build month | Use it for model year only. Check the RC's Date of Manufacture or pre-registration paperwork for month and year. |
| Assuming position 12 always means the same month | Maker-specific coding varies. Confirm a claimed month with the maker's official manual, dealer paperwork or RC. |
| Confusing registration date with manufacturing date | Read the labels. The RC format carries both vehicle details and a separate registration date. |
Quietly changing 0 to O, or 1 to I, after a failed result | Recheck the metal stamp in good light. Copy what is there, not what seems plausible. |
| Trusting a decoder to settle a mismatch | Stop the transaction until the recorded owner, maker or registering authority explains it. |
If the car is Maruti, Hyundai or Tata
Maker guidance is useful for finding the location and reading its own codes, but it should not replace the RC's recorded manufacturing date. Use the brand guide that fits the car: Maruti manufacturing-date check, Hyundai manufacturing-date check, or Tata manufacturing-date check. Then return to the vehicle and its papers for the final comparison.
For a new car, do this before registration and before signing a delivery acceptance note: photograph the VIN area with the seller's permission, check all 17 characters against the invoice and Form 20 or Form 22 paperwork, and ask for the RC entry once registration is complete. For a used car, add the seller's identity, current RC and insurance papers to the comparison. If any character or date does not line up, wait. A discount does not make a document mismatch safe.

Which cycle? On North American cars and light trucks, check position 7. If it's a number the vehicle is from 1980–2009, and if it's a letter it's from 2010–2039. The highlighted code is the current calendar year.
Anatomy of a VIN, character by character
Every position has a job, set by the ISO 3779 standard and U.S. federal rule 49 CFR Part 565. Tap a section to see what it encodes.
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
The first character is the region or country of manufacture. The second is the manufacturer, and the third is usually the vehicle type or division. Low-volume makers (under 1,000 vehicles a year) use a 9 in position 3 and carry an extra code in positions 12–14.
Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Five characters the manufacturer uses to describe the vehicle: model line, series, body type, engine and restraint system. Each maker defines its own scheme, which is why decoding needs a manufacturer database like NHTSA's vPIC.
Check digit
Each character is converted to a number, multiplied by a positional weight, summed and divided by 11. The remainder, 0–9 or X for 10, must equal position 9. A mismatch means a typo or a VIN that deserves a closer look.
Model year
One letter or digit maps to the model year and repeats every 30 years. For North American cars and light trucks, a digit in position 7 points to 1980–2009 and a letter points to 2010–2039. The full chart is below.
Assembly plant
The manufacturer's code for the factory that built the vehicle. It's useful for recall campaigns, which are often limited to one plant and date range.
Production sequence
The serial number of this vehicle on the production line. Combined with the first eleven characters it makes the VIN unique. For low-volume makers, positions 12–14 complete the manufacturer code.
Questions, answered
Use a car manufacturing date check by VIN to decode the model year, then compare the official month and year on the RC or Form 22 before you buy a car.
Can a VIN tell me the exact manufacturing month?
No. A VIN decode can identify its structure and usually the model year, but it does not universally encode an exact build month. Use the RC Date of Manufacture field or the maker's registration and delivery papers to confirm the recorded month and year.
Which document is the best proof of a car's manufacturing date in India?
The RC is the best post-registration record because the prescribed Form 23A format includes Date of Manufacture in mm-yyyy. Before registration, compare the chassis number and month/year across Form 20, Form 22, invoice and delivery papers, then retain copies.
What if the VIN model year and the RC manufacturing year differ?
A difference is not automatically a problem because model year and calendar build year are separate concepts. Do not accept an unexplained conflict between the physical VIN and the official documents, though. Ask the dealer, maker or recorded owner to resolve it before payment.
Can I run a manufacturing-date check with only the last five VIN characters?
No. The last five characters may be enough for a particular government service, but they cannot support a full VIN-structure or model-year check. Use the complete 17-character chassis number taken from the car and matched to its documents.
Does this check show ownership, accidents or insurance claims?
No. This tool decodes VIN or chassis-number structure and available NHTSA vPIC vehicle attributes. It does not access registration, ownership, accident, insurance, odometer, finance, police or service records.
Why does the checker show an unknown or blank vehicle field?
A blank field means the decoder could not establish that detail from the VIN structure or the available vPIC response. It is not proof of a particular trim, engine, factory or date. Confirm those details from the manufacturer's paperwork or an authorised dealer.
