Tata Manufacturing Date Check: VIN and RC Guide
Check a Tata car manufacturing date from the stamped VIN, Form 22 and RC. Follow a safe pre-delivery process for Nexon, Punch, Harrier, Safari and Tiago.
For a Tata car manufacturing date check, match the chassis number stamped on the allocated vehicle with Form 22 before registration, then confirm the RC field called Date of Manufacture after registration. A 17-character VIN can help you check identity and model year, but it does not replace the manufacturer record for the assembly month.
Start with the VIN decoder home to create an error-free copy and use the manufacturing-date page as a second check. Take the full VIN, not only the last six digits, to the stockyard.
Tata Manufacturing Date Check Before Delivery
Ask for the vehicle allotment letter, Form 22, provisional invoice and keys before you visit the stockyard. A dealer can show you the vehicle first and register it later. That sequence gives you room to correct an allocation mistake.
- Find the actual chassis stamp, photograph it and make a written 17-character transcription.
- Match it to the dealer allotment. Read characters in groups and revisit any mark that could be a letter or numeral.
- On Form 22, compare the Chassis number field and the Engine number or motor-number field with the car where visible.
- Ask which document records the month and year of manufacture. Photograph the page with its VIN, date and dealer stamp visible.
- Once the RC is available, check Date of Manufacture (In mm-yyyy) and Chassis Number. An RC status check can help you find the official route for a registered vehicle.
An illustrative string, MATAB12CDT3123456, demonstrates position counting only. MAT is the WMI portion, T is character 10, 3 is character 11 and 123456 is the six-character ending. It is not a real Nexon, Punch, Harrier or Tiago VIN. A sample never proves a trim, plant or month.
Find and Preserve the Tata Chassis Number
Use the owner manual for the exact Tata model and model year to locate the stamp. Dealers sometimes point at a label because it is easier to see. Ask to see the physical metal stamp as well. It might be behind a factory carpet flap, near a structural floor section or elsewhere specified in the manual. Do not force trim, scratch paint or probe the stamping with metal tools.
Make two records: a wide photograph that establishes the location and a close shot sharp enough to read the characters. Then compare that photograph with a certification label, if fitted. A label is a useful second point, but the metal stamp has higher value when you are confirming the body shell. Fresh paint around the stamp, a raised label edge, or numbers that look reworked are reasons to ask the workshop manager for a formal inspection.
The car manufacturing-date guide explains how this same check fits into a new-car or used-car deal.
Read a Tata VIN Without Inventing a Month
BIS says the VIN has 17 characters. The first three identify the manufacturer, the next six are the Vehicle Descriptor Section, and the final eight are the Vehicle Identifier Section. A BIS technical document describes position 10 as model year, position 11 as manufacturer plant code, and positions 12 to 17 as the six-digit serial number. It also notes that I, O and Q are excluded from VINs to reduce errors.
That standard structure is why a claim that the 12th character always encodes a Tata manufacturing month needs strong maker evidence. We did not find a Tata Motors public owner manual, service bulletin or other official page that publishes a current universal month-code table for Tata passenger cars. Do not let an unsourced chart overrule the document for the car you are buying.
Use the VIN 10th-character year chart for the model-year position, with its 30-year-cycle caution. For the exact month, obtain Form 22, a sale certificate where applicable, the dealer DMS allocation printout and written clarification from the authorised dealer. This is slower than a code chart, but it can actually support a delivery decision.
| Record | Confirms | Does not confirm alone |
|---|---|---|
| Stamped VIN | The vehicle identity | Assembly month or storage care |
| Position 10 | Model-year position | Calendar production month |
| Form 22 | Manufacturer-issued compliance record for the chassis | Paint, battery and tyre condition |
| Dealer DMS printout | The dealer's stock allocation | The physical vehicle without a VIN match |
| RC | Recorded Date of Manufacture after registration | Pre-delivery defects |
Form 22, Sale Documents and the RC
Form 22 is the prescribed road-worthiness certificate issued by the manufacturer or importer with the vehicle. Read the Model / Commercial Name, Chassis number, Engine number and emission-compliance information. A temporary tag on the windscreen or a hand-written stock slip is not a substitute.
The prescribed RC format under Form 23A includes Date of Manufacture (In mm-yyyy) and Chassis Number. For an existing owner, an official digital RC through DigiLocker can be useful because DigiLocker says it fetches MoRTH records from the National Register for the matching owner record. The same matching rule remains: compare digital and physical identifiers.
If invoice, Form 22 and RC show dates that seem out of sequence, ask which date each represents. Manufacturing, dispatch, invoicing and registration are different milestones. If the VIN differs, do not accept a later correction promise. Ask the dealer to correct the documents or allocate another car before registration.
Tata PDI: Checks After the Date Match
The date match is one PDI item, not the whole inspection. Check paint under daylight, panel gaps, glass, lamps, wheel rims, spare wheel, toolkit, both keys and every electrical feature on the booking. Start the engine and note any warning lamp that remains lit. Photograph the odometer reading and ask the dealer to explain it in the context of transport or demonstration use, rather than relying on a universal threshold.
Check the four-digit DOT week-year marking on each tyre and the spare. It dates a tyre, not the vehicle. Still, a tyre much older than the car, a cracked sidewall or a flat-spotted feel needs a written response. If the vehicle has waited in stock, request a battery health report and ask where it was stored. For the negotiation and condition questions, read new car with an old manufacturing date before accepting accessories in place of an unresolved defect.
Write all pending repairs or replacements on the delivery document. Do not sign a blank PDI sheet.
If a dealer proposes a repair before delivery, ask where the job will be performed and request its job-card number. Inspect the repaired panel, wheel or component after the work is closed. A line such as “touch-up completed” is not enough for a new car buyer who has not yet accepted the vehicle. Your photographs, dated PDI note and the VIN on each document keep the conversation about the assigned car rather than a generic model.
Frequently asked questions
Which Tata VIN character shows the manufacturing month?
Do not treat an unsupported fixed-position month chart as proof. Confirm the recorded manufacturing month and year from the manufacturer Form 22 and the RC Date of Manufacture field.
Can I check the Tata VIN before I pay the balance?
Yes. Ask the dealer to show the allocated vehicle, stamped chassis number and Form 22 before registration and final delivery paperwork.
What does the 10th VIN character show?
The Indian VIN reference describes position 10 as the model-year position. It is not the exact assembly month.
What should I do if the car and Form 22 do not match?
Pause delivery and registration, photograph both identifiers, and ask for corrected paperwork or another vehicle allocation in writing.
