Mahindra Chassis Number Decoder: Free Online Lookup
Enter a 17-character Mahindra VIN to read the maker prefix, model family, model-year letter and month letter, then compare it with the SUV or pickup and its papers.
Mahindra SUVs have long waiting lists, and a long wait is where chassis-number disputes start: a buyer who waited a year for a Scorpio-N or Thar Roxx wants to know the vehicle was built recently, not pulled from a yard. Enter the chassis number above and the decoder reads the MA1 prefix, a model family from the descriptor letters, the model-year letter in position 10 and the month letter in position 12. Then confirm the month against Form 22, which is the document the dealer has to produce.
MA1, MAB and MAC: the Mahindra prefixes
| Prefix | What the decoder shows | Notes |
|---|---|---|
MA1 | Mahindra, India, car | The prefix on current SUVs and pickups: Scorpio, Thar, XUV700, XUV 3XO, Bolero |
MAB | Mahindra, India, car | A second Mahindra allocation the decoder recognises |
MAC | Mahindra, India, car | A third Mahindra allocation |
MB7 | Mahindra Reva, India | The e2o and earlier Reva electric cars |
MCD | Mahindra, India, two-wheeler | Mahindra scooters and motorcycles, a different vehicle class |
Three car prefixes exist because Mahindra registered more than one WMI over the decades. All three decode as Mahindra. A number starting with MCD on something sold as a car is wrong.
Positions 4 to 9: Mahindra model families by letter
Mahindra uses letters in the descriptor section but does not publish what they mean. The table lists the prefixes the decoder matches today. We built it from chassis numbers we have seen, not from a Mahindra document, so treat a match as a hint and confirm the model on the RC:
| Positions 4 onward | Model family the decoder shows | Segment | Drive and fuel in that family |
|---|---|---|---|
TA2WJ | Scorpio or Scorpio-N | SUV | 2WD or 4WD, diesel or petrol |
TH | Thar or Thar Roxx | Off-road SUV | 4WD or rear-wheel drive, petrol or diesel |
XU7 | XUV700 | Mid-size SUV | Petrol or diesel |
XU3 | XUV300 or XUV 3XO | Compact SUV | Petrol or diesel |
BL | Bolero or Bolero Neo | Utility vehicle | Diesel |
The XUV400, the BE 6 and XEV 9e electric SUVs, the Marazzo and the Scorpio Classic are not yet in the table, so they return the maker and year without a family. The family is also not a variant: TH covers a rear-wheel-drive Thar petrol and a four-wheel-drive Thar diesel alike.
Mahindra year letter (position 10) and month letter (position 12)
Position 10 is the ISO 3779 model-year letter: R for 2024, S for 2025, T for 2026. The chart lower on the page covers the full cycle.
Position 12 is the month letter the decoder shows as "Manufacturing month":
| Letter | Month | Letter | Month |
|---|---|---|---|
A | January | G | July |
B | February | H | August |
C | March | J | September |
D | April | K | October |
E | May | L | November |
F | June | M | December |
Mahindra has not published a month table, and its owner-forum reports are less consistent than Tata's, so treat the month as a lead to check. The manufacturer's Form 22 carries the recorded month and year, and the RC repeats it after registration. Our guide on checking a car manufacturing date shows how the documents fit together.
Position 9 is not a check digit on an Indian VIN. Ignore a check-digit warning on an MA1 number.
Worked example: a Thar chassis number
Illustrative only: MA1TH2RNKSEG12345 is made up and does not identify a real vehicle.
| Characters | Position | What the decoder shows |
|---|---|---|
MA1 | 1 to 3 | Mahindra, India |
TH2RNK | 4 to 9 | Thar or Thar Roxx family |
S | 10 | 2025 model year |
E | 11 | Maker-defined, not decoded |
G | 12 | July, shown as manufacturing month |
12345 | 13 to 17 | Production sequence |
For a Thar delivered in September 2025, a July build is normal. For one delivered in April 2026 after a "fresh allotment", it is a question for the dealer, and Form 22 answers it.
Where Mahindra puts the VIN
Mahindra's manuals give a different location for each model:
| Model and manual | Stamped or punched number | Plate |
|---|---|---|
| XUV700 | Floor below the driver seat, under a carpet cutout | Riveted to the lower driver-side B-pillar |
| Thar 2WD | Below the driver seat | Below the driver seat |
| Bolero Power+ | Right-side chassis member below the front fender | Engine bay |
| Scorpio Classic | Chassis member | Top face of the cross member under the bonnet |
Ladder-frame Mahindras carry the number on the chassis rail, where mud and underbody coating hide it. Clean it with a cloth and a torch, never a scraper. On a used Bolero or Scorpio, a rail number that looks ground down or re-struck is a reason to walk away.
What a Mahindra VIN leaves out
- The variant. AX5, AX7, Z4, Z8 and LX are on the invoice and Form 22.
- Four-wheel drive. The family shows that 4WD exists in the line, not that this vehicle has it. Check the transfer-case lever or the dial.
- Ownership, loans and claims. Use the RC check guide for the official records.
- Recall completion. Mahindra handles campaigns through dealers by chassis number.
Before you accept a Mahindra
- Copy the number from the chassis rail or the floor stamp, not from the allotment letter.
- Decode it above and confirm the family, the year letter and the month letter against the invoice.
- Compare the month letter with Form 22. For a vehicle you waited months for, this is the step that matters.
- For a used Scorpio, Thar or Bolero, add the vehicle history checklist and the RC check.
For other Indian makers, see the Tata, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai pages. Their prefixes and family tables differ from Mahindra's.
Anatomy of a VIN, character by character
Every position has a job, set by the ISO 3779 standard and U.S. federal rule 49 CFR Part 565. Tap a section to see what it encodes.
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
The first character is the region or country of manufacture. The second is the manufacturer, and the third is usually the vehicle type or division. Low-volume makers (under 1,000 vehicles a year) use a 9 in position 3 and carry an extra code in positions 12–14.
Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Five characters the manufacturer uses to describe the vehicle: model line, series, body type, engine and restraint system. Each maker defines its own scheme, which is why decoding needs a manufacturer database like NHTSA's vPIC.
Check digit
Each character is converted to a number, multiplied by a positional weight, summed and divided by 11. The remainder, 0–9 or X for 10, must equal position 9. A mismatch means a typo or a VIN that deserves a closer look.
Model year
One letter or digit maps to the model year and repeats every 30 years. For North American cars and light trucks, a digit in position 7 points to 1980–2009 and a letter points to 2010–2039. The full chart is below.
Assembly plant
The manufacturer's code for the factory that built the vehicle. It's useful for recall campaigns, which are often limited to one plant and date range.
Production sequence
The serial number of this vehicle on the production line. Combined with the first eleven characters it makes the VIN unique. For low-volume makers, positions 12–14 complete the manufacturer code.
VIN model year chart
The 10th character of every VIN. The letters I, O, Q, U and Z and the digit 0 are never used here.

Which cycle? On North American cars and light trucks, check position 7. If it's a number the vehicle is from 1980–2009, and if it's a letter it's from 2010–2039. The highlighted code is the current calendar year.
Questions, answered
Free Mahindra chassis number decoder. Read the MA1 prefix, model family, year letter and a month clue from the VIN, then confirm it on Form 22 and the RC.
Can I use a Mahindra chassis number check with fewer than 17 characters?
No. Use the complete 17-character VIN from the vehicle for a meaningful Mahindra chassis number check. A short suffix from an advert may help a dealer locate stock, but it cannot support a full structure comparison with the RC or Form 22.
Will a Mahindra VIN decoder identify the exact variant?
Not reliably. Available VIN data may return a make, model or body class, but it is not a certificate of the exact trim, engine, gearbox, colour or factory-fitted options. Confirm those details from the maker, invoice and the vehicle itself.
Does a Mahindra chassis number check show the registered owner?
No. vindecode.pro decodes VIN structure and available NHTSA vPIC attributes. It does not access registration, owner, insurance, finance, accident, police, service or claim databases.
Is the VIN model year the same as the manufacturing month?
No. A model-year result is not the vehicle's recorded manufacturing month. For an unregistered vehicle, compare the chassis number with Form 22 or Form 20; after registration, compare it with the RC's Date of Manufacture field.
What should I do if the Mahindra VIN and RC do not match?
Pause the delivery, sale or transfer. Recheck the physical number in good light, then ask the dealer, seller or registering authority for a written explanation before paying or signing an acceptance document.
