Harley-Davidson VIN Decoder: Free Model, Engine & Year Lookup
Enter a 17-character Harley-Davidson VIN to read the model, engine, model year and assembly plant from NHTSA data. Free, no sign-up.
Used Harleys change hands with more modifications than any other vehicle on this site. Big-bore kits, swapped tanks and new paint can make a 107 look like a 114 or one Softail look like another. The VIN records what left York, and unlike a car VIN it carries the model designation (FLHX, FXBRS) in positions 5 and 6 and the engine family in position 7. Enter the VIN above and the decoder reads it against NHTSA's vPIC database using Harley-Davidson's own filing. The tables below are the codes we checked for current Touring, Softail and Sportster models.
1HD and 5HD: Harley-Davidson's WMIs
| WMI | What it means |
|---|---|
1HD | Harley-Davidson motorcycles built in the US |
5HD | Harley-Davidson motorcycles built in the US (another registered WMI) |
932 | Harley-Davidson motorcycles assembled in Brazil |
HDR | Harley-Davidson off-road motorcycles |
Most Harleys sold new in the US start with 1HD. Position 4 on these road bikes is typically 1, and position 11 is B for York, Pennsylvania, which has built the big twins for decades. A different plant code should match a different WMI and model.
Positions 5 and 6: the model code
On modern Harleys, positions 5 and 6 together identify the model. These are codes vPIC returns for recent bikes:
| Positions 5–6 | Model | Designation |
|---|---|---|
KB | Street Glide | FLHX |
KH | Road Glide | FLTRX |
FB | Road King | FLHR |
FV | Electra Glide Standard | FLHT |
YG | Fat Boy 114 | FLFBS |
YH | Breakout 114 | FXBRS |
YY | Street Bob 114 | FXBBS |
YL | Fat Bob 114 | FXFBS |
YB | Heritage Classic 114 | FLHCS |
YW | Low Rider S | FXLRS |
YX | Low Rider ST | FXLRST |
LC | Forty-Eight | XL1200X |
Harley has reused letter pairs over the decades. vPIC also returns older meanings for some pairs, such as D* codes for Evolution-era Electra Glides and G* codes for Dyna models. Always decode the full VIN with the model-year character rather than reading the pair alone.
Position 7: 107, 114 or 117
Position 7 tracks the engine. In vPIC results for recent bikes:
| Position 7 | Engine |
|---|---|
C or J | Milwaukee-Eight 107 (1,746 cc) |
K | Milwaukee-Eight 114 (1,868 cc) |
Z | Milwaukee-Eight 117 (1,923 cc) |
3 | Sportster 1200 (1,200 cc) |
R | 80 cu in (1,340 cc), on older Evolution-era bikes |
This is how you check an engine claim. A Low Rider S with a C in position 7 would be worth asking about, because vPIC lists recent Low Rider S models with the 117 (Z). An aftermarket big-bore kit changes the displacement, but it does not change the VIN.
Position 10 letter to Harley engine era
Harley's model years track engine generations more closely than body styles, and the year letter in position 10 tells you which engine family the bike should have:
| Letter | Model year | Big twins (Touring, Softail, Dyna) | Sportster |
|---|---|---|---|
X | 1999 | Twin Cam 88 arrives on Touring and Dyna | Evolution 883 and 1200 |
7 | 2007 | Twin Cam 96, six-speed | Evolution, fuel injection |
A | 2010 | Twin Cam 96; 103 on some Touring | Evolution |
C | 2012 | Twin Cam 103 standard on Touring and Softail | Evolution |
E | 2014 | Rushmore Touring update, Twin Cam 103 | Evolution |
G | 2016 | Twin Cam 103 and 110, last full year | Evolution |
H | 2017 | Milwaukee-Eight 107 and 114 on Touring (new) | Evolution |
J | 2018 | New Softail platform; Dyna line ends | Evolution |
M | 2021 | Milwaukee-Eight 114; 117 on CVO models | Sportster S with Revolution Max (new); last Evolution Sportsters in the US |
N | 2022 | Milwaukee-Eight 107, 114, 117 | Nightster added |
R | 2024 | Redesigned Street Glide and Road Glide, 117 standard | Revolution Max only |
S | 2025 | Milwaukee-Eight 117 on Street Glide and Road Glide | Revolution Max |
T | 2026 | Milwaukee-Eight 117 | Revolution Max |
Letters not shown carry the same engine family as the row above them. A model year usually goes on sale before the calendar year begins, so a 2024 bike may have been built in 2023. The frame label carries the build month, and the manufacturing date guide covers model year versus build date.
Worked example: decoding a Fat Boy VIN
Illustrative only: 1HD1YGK12RB100001 is a made-up VIN with a valid check digit. It does not belong to a real motorcycle.
| Characters | Position | Decoded |
|---|---|---|
1HD | 1–3 | Harley-Davidson, built in the US |
1 | 4 | Motorcycle type |
YG | 5–6 | Fat Boy 114 |
K | 7 | Milwaukee-Eight 114 |
1 | 8 | Manufacturer code |
2 | 9 | Check digit (valid) |
R | 10 | 2024 model year |
B | 11 | York, Pennsylvania |
100001 | 12–17 | Production serial |
vPIC returns this sample as a 2024 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy 114, FLFBS, 1,868 cc V-twin, built in York. If the seller called it a 117, the seventh character would not back that up. Frame stampings are easy to misread under paint or grime, so if the check digit fails, recheck 8 against B, 0 against D and 5 against S before you assume anything worse.
Steering head, frame label and engine case
A motorcycle has no windshield plate or door jamb, so the places to read a Harley VIN are different from a car's:
- Steering head (frame neck). The full 17-character VIN is stamped on the right side of the steering head. Turn the bars fully to the left and use a flashlight.
- Certification label. Most models carry a label on the frame, usually near the steering head or down tube, that repeats the VIN with the month and year of manufacture.
- Engine case. Harley stamps an abbreviated VIN on the crankcase. It should match part of the frame VIN. A mismatch can mean a replacement engine, which is legal but should be disclosed and should be priced accordingly.
- Title and registration. Compare all 17 characters with the frame, not only the last six.
If the stamping is damaged, ground down or looks re-struck, stop. Altered VINs are a common sign of a stolen bike, and many states require a law-enforcement or DMV inspection before such a motorcycle can be titled. Our Florida VIN verification guide covers one state's process.
What a Harley VIN does not tell you
- Modifications. Stage kits, big-bore cylinders, exhausts and tuners are not in the VIN.
- Paint and options. Colour, wheels and factory accessories are not encoded.
- Pre-1981 bikes. Harleys built before the 17-character standard use shorter serial formats that vPIC cannot decode.
- History. Theft, salvage titles, crashes and mileage come from state and insurance records. The vehicle history check guide explains which ones cover motorcycles.
Harley-Davidson recalls
The decode result above lists the safety recalls NHTSA has on file for that model and year. To see whether one is still open on this exact bike, run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. Harley-Davidson dealers perform recall repairs free, regardless of who owns the motorcycle.
Run a title and theft check before you pay; the free VIN check guide explains which checks cost nothing. Other motorcycles use different model-code positions, so for a Japanese bike see the motorcycle VIN decoder guide instead.
Anatomy of a VIN, character by character
Every position has a job, set by the ISO 3779 standard and U.S. federal rule 49 CFR Part 565. Tap a section to see what it encodes.
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
The first character is the region or country of manufacture. The second is the manufacturer, and the third is usually the vehicle type or division. Low-volume makers (under 1,000 vehicles a year) use a 9 in position 3 and carry an extra code in positions 12–14.
Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Five characters the manufacturer uses to describe the vehicle: model line, series, body type, engine and restraint system. Each maker defines its own scheme, which is why decoding needs a manufacturer database like NHTSA's vPIC.
Check digit
Each character is converted to a number, multiplied by a positional weight, summed and divided by 11. The remainder, 0–9 or X for 10, must equal position 9. A mismatch means a typo or a VIN that deserves a closer look.
Model year
One letter or digit maps to the model year and repeats every 30 years. For North American cars and light trucks, a digit in position 7 points to 1980–2009 and a letter points to 2010–2039. The full chart is below.
Assembly plant
The manufacturer's code for the factory that built the vehicle. It's useful for recall campaigns, which are often limited to one plant and date range.
Production sequence
The serial number of this vehicle on the production line. Combined with the first eleven characters it makes the VIN unique. For low-volume makers, positions 12–14 complete the manufacturer code.
VIN model year chart
The 10th character of every VIN. The letters I, O, Q, U and Z and the digit 0 are never used here.

Which cycle? On North American cars and light trucks, check position 7. If it's a number the vehicle is from 1980–2009, and if it's a letter it's from 2010–2039. The highlighted code is the current calendar year.
Questions, answered
Free Harley-Davidson VIN decoder. Read the model, engine size (107, 114, 117), model year and plant from any 17-character Harley VIN, then check recalls.
Where is the VIN on a Harley-Davidson?
The full 17-character VIN is stamped on the right side of the steering head. Turn the bars fully left and use a flashlight. An abbreviated VIN is also stamped on the engine crankcase.
How do I tell engine size from a Harley VIN?
Check the 7th character. On recent bikes in vPIC, C or J is the 107, K is the 114 and Z is the 117 Milwaukee-Eight. A big-bore kit can change the engine, but not the VIN.
What do the 5th and 6th digits mean on a Harley VIN?
Together they identify the model. For example, KB is the Street Glide (FLHX), KH is the Road Glide (FLTRX) and YG is the Fat Boy 114.
Can I decode a Harley built before 1981?
Not with vPIC. Harleys built before the 17-character VIN standard use older, shorter serial formats that the NHTSA database does not cover.
How do I check Harley-Davidson recalls by VIN?
The decode result lists recalls for that model and year. For open recalls on one motorcycle, enter the VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup. Harley-Davidson dealers do recall repairs free.
