Maruti Manufacturing Date Check: VIN, Form 22 and RC
Find the real manufacturing month of a Maruti Suzuki car before delivery. Read it on Form 22 and the RC, with Fronx, Ertiga and Swift examples.
To check a Maruti Suzuki manufacturing date, match the chassis number stamped on the allocated car with Form 22 before registration, then confirm the RC field named Date of Manufacture once the RC is issued. The VIN is useful for identity and model-year checks, but it is not reliable proof of the assembly month by itself.
Begin with the VIN decoder home so you have a clean 17-character copy, then compare it with the manufacturing-date page. At a dealership, the physical stamp and documents matter more than a screenshot from an unverified month-code list. Buying a Fronx or Ertiga? The same method applies, and the Fronx and Ertiga section lists the exact records to ask for.
Maruti Manufacturing Date Check at the Dealership
Ask the sales adviser to bring the vehicle to a well-lit inspection bay. Take a notebook, phone torch and the dealer's vehicle allotment sheet. First identify the actual car, then discuss the date.
- Locate the stamped chassis number and photograph it without covering any character.
- Compare it with the allotment sheet. Read it aloud in groups of three or four, because
B,8,Sand5can look alike on paint-covered metal. - Ask for Form 22. Verify the field labelled Chassis number against your photograph.
- Ask the dealer to identify the record used for the declared month and year. Keep a copy or dated photograph of the relevant page with the VIN visible.
- After registration, use the RC check page and compare the field labelled Date of Manufacture (mm-yyyy) on the RC with your pre-delivery file.
Do not confuse the booking date, invoice date, dispatch date and registration date with manufacturing date. They describe different events. A clear paper trail tells you when a document was issued and which chassis it covers.
Find and Match the Maruti Chassis Number
The exact stamping location varies by model and model year. Start with the owner manual for the allocated Fronx, Swift, Baleno, Brezza, Ertiga or WagonR, rather than repeating a location from another car. The dealership should be able to show the physical VIN without removing parts or damaging trim. Common places to inspect are a structural engine-bay panel, an under-seat floor stamp, a door-pillar label or a windshield viewing area, but the manual is the tie-breaker.
Use two vehicle locations where possible: the hard-to-alter metal stamp and a certification label. The label is quick to read, while the stamp lets you see that the identifier belongs to the body shell. If the paint around the stamp looks freshly disturbed, the characters are uneven, or the label appears lifted, stop and have an authorised service manager inspect it. Do not try to clean, rub or restamp the number yourself.
The broader car manufacturing-date guide explains the same document-first approach across brands.
Read a Maruti VIN Without Guessing the Month
The BIS description breaks a 17-character VIN into three parts: positions 1 to 3 are the WMI, 4 to 9 the Vehicle Descriptor Section, and 10 to 17 the Vehicle Identifier Section. Its supporting Indian VIN document describes position 10 as model year, position 11 as plant code and positions 12 to 17 as serial number. It also says letters I, O and Q are excluded to avoid confusion.
Use a made-up string such as MA3AB12CDT3123456 only as a counting exercise. MA3 occupies positions 1 to 3; T is in position 10; 3 is in position 11; and 123456 occupies positions 12 to 17. It does not identify a real Maruti model, and it does not prove that the 11th character is a month. The 10th position can be checked against the VIN year-code chart, subject to the repeating model-year cycle.
We did not find a Maruti Suzuki public manual, service bulletin or manufacturer page that publishes a current, model-independent month-code scheme. That absence matters. A confident letter-to-month table may look useful, but it cannot settle a delivery disagreement. Ask for Form 22, the sale certificate where applicable, the dealer DMS allocation printout and written confirmation from the dealer instead.
| Source | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Chassis stamp | Confirms the identity of the physical car | Does not show storage condition |
| VIN position 10 | Checks the model-year position | Does not state exact assembly month |
| Dealer DMS allocation printout | Links the VIN to the dealer's allocation | Ask for a dated copy |
| Form 22 | Manufacturer-issued compliance record for that chassis | Read it alongside the car, not alone |
| RC | Shows prescribed Date of Manufacture and chassis fields after registration | Too late to replace a car without extra work |
Form 22, Invoice and RC Date Fields
Form 22 is prescribed as the road-worthiness certificate issued by the manufacturer or importer with the vehicle. Check its Model / Commercial Name, Chassis number, Engine number and compliance information. The document is stronger than a salesperson's statement because it is tied to the manufacturer-issued vehicle record.
The RC format under Form 23A lists Date of Manufacture (In mm-yyyy) and Chassis Number among vehicle details. For a car you already own, retrieve the RC through the official route available to the owner and preserve the downloaded version with your invoice. DigiLocker says a fetched MoRTH digital RC comes from the National Register when the owner record matches.
If an invoice says one thing and Form 22 or the RC says another, do not decide from the invoice alone. Ask the dealer to reconcile the records in writing. If the VIN itself differs, do not permit registration to proceed against that vehicle.
Fronx and Ertiga Manufacturing Date Check
A Fronx or Ertiga manufacturing date is checked the same way as any other Maruti Suzuki: match the stamped chassis number to Form 22 before registration, then read the RC Date of Manufacture field after it. As with the rest of the range, we found no public Maruti Suzuki source that lets you read the build month from the VIN.
Maruti Suzuki unveiled the Fronx at Auto Expo 2023, launched it on 24 April 2023 and sells it through NEXA. The Ertiga is sold through Maruti Suzuki Arena, in petrol and CNG versions. The dealer channel changes, but the documents do not.
| Record | Where to find it | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Stamped VIN (chassis number) | On the body of the car; the Fronx or Ertiga owner manual shows the exact spot | The identity of the physical car and the model-year character at position 10 |
| Dealer allotment sheet | From the NEXA or Arena sales adviser | Links the chassis number to your booking |
| Form 22 | Issued by the manufacturer with the vehicle; ask for it before registration | Model name, chassis number and engine number for that car |
| RC (Form 23A format) | Issued after registration | Date of Manufacture (mm-yyyy) and Chassis Number |
For a new Fronx, the steps are:
- Ask the NEXA adviser to show the stamped VIN on the allotted car and photograph it.
- Match all 17 characters with the allotment sheet and the Chassis number field on Form 22.
- Ask which manufacturer record gives the month and year, and keep a copy before you pay the balance.
- After registration, check that the RC Date of Manufacture agrees with what you were told.
For a used Fronx or Ertiga, the RC is the quickest answer. Read the Date of Manufacture field, then confirm the RC chassis number matches the stamp on the car. Our RC check page explains the official routes for viewing an RC.
We did not find a Maruti Suzuki page that publishes model-specific VIN stamp locations for the Fronx or the Ertiga. Use the owner manual supplied with the car, and do not rely on location lists written for other models or for Suzuki cars sold in other countries.
PDI Checks for a Swift, Baleno or Brezza
After the VIN check, inspect the car with the engine cold if possible. Walk around it in daylight and check paint consistency, panel gaps, wheel-rim scuffs, glass marks, lamps, spare wheel, toolkit and both keys. Turn on every electrical function you paid for. Record the odometer reading but ask the dealer to explain it rather than using an arbitrary mileage cutoff.
Check all tyres for the four-digit DOT week-year marking and include the spare. That marking dates the tyre, not the vehicle, but it can reveal a tyre that needs an explanation. Start the car and check for warning lights that stay on. If the car has an older manufacturing date, ask where it was stored and request a battery test report. The old-stock new-car guide helps you decide which answers are worth putting into the deal sheet.
Do not sign a blank inspection form. Write down every unresolved point, photograph it and settle the remedy before registration.
Before you leave, ask for the dealer contact who owns each pending job and the promised completion date. Keep the allocation number, VIN and repair note together. If the promised work is completed before handover, inspect the repaired area again in daylight and write the result on the delivery record. That short second check is often where a vague promise becomes a specific, verifiable repair.
Frequently asked questions
Which Maruti VIN character gives the manufacturing month?
Do not rely on an unsupported fixed-position month chart. Public Indian VIN references define the standard sections and model-year position, but the exact manufacturing month should be confirmed from Form 22 and the RC Date of Manufacture field.
Can I verify a Maruti manufacturing date before registration?
Yes. Match the stamped VIN to the dealer allotment and Form 22, then ask the dealer to show the date recorded in the manufacturer documents before registration is submitted.
Does the invoice prove the build month?
An invoice records a sale or supply transaction. Use it as a supporting record, but verify the vehicle identity against Form 22 and the stamped VIN.
How do I check my Fronx manufacturing date?
Before registration, match the chassis number stamped on the Fronx with the NEXA dealer allotment and Form 22, and ask the dealer which manufacturer record gives the month and year. After registration, read the Date of Manufacture (mm-yyyy) field on the RC and confirm its Chassis Number matches the car.
Where is the Ertiga manufacturing date shown?
On a registered Ertiga, the RC carries a Date of Manufacture field in mm-yyyy format next to the chassis number. For a new Ertiga at an Arena dealer, check the stamped VIN against Form 22 and the allotment before registration. The owner manual shows where the VIN is on your model.
What if the dealer says the VIN is enough?
Ask for Form 22 and a clear explanation of the manufacturing date. A VIN cannot replace the document check when you need the actual recorded month and year.
