Polaris VIN Decoder: RZR, Ranger, Sportsman and Slingshot
Decode a Polaris VIN for a RZR, Ranger, Sportsman, Slingshot or snowmobile with real NHTSA decodes, model codes, plant letters and where the VIN is stamped.
A Polaris VIN decoder turns the 17-character number on a RZR, Ranger, General, Sportsman, Slingshot or snowmobile into the model family, engine, model year and factory. Positions 4 and 5 carry the model family, position 10 the year and position 11 the plant, so 4XANAE990PA100001 reads as a 2023 RZR XP 1000 built in Roseau, Minnesota.
Every example below is one we ran through NHTSA's vPIC database (data checked October 2026). Paste your own VIN into the free VIN decoder to get the same result for your machine.
| What you want to know | Where it is in a Polaris VIN | Example from our decodes |
|---|---|---|
| Built by Polaris? | Positions 1-3 | 4XA, 3NS, 57X, SN1 |
| Model family | Positions 4-5 | NA = RZR XP 1000, RR = Ranger XP 1000 |
| Engine | Positions 6-8 | E99 = 999 cc twin, E57 = 567 cc single |
| Model year | Position 10 | P = 2023, T = 2026 |
| Factory | Position 11 | A = Roseau MN, 8 = Huntsville AL, 2 = Spirit Lake IA |
What do the 17 characters of a Polaris VIN mean?
A Polaris VIN has six blocks. The first three characters name the maker, the next five describe the vehicle, the ninth is a math check, the tenth is the model year, the eleventh is the assembly plant and the last six are the serial number. Polaris has used this 17-character format since the 1997 model year.
Here is the RZR from the opening, laid out position by position:
| Position | Meaning | 4XANAE990PA100001 | vPIC result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | World Manufacturer Identifier | 4XA | Polaris Industries Inc. |
| 4-5 | Model family | NA | RZR XP 1000 |
| 6-8 | Engine and options | E99 | 999 cc, 2 cylinders |
| 9 | Check digit | 0 | Correct |
| 10 | Model year | P | 2023 |
| 11 | Plant | A | Roseau, Minnesota |
| 12-17 | Serial number | 100001 | Production sequence |
vPIC returned error codes 0 and 10 for this VIN. Code 0 means the VIN is valid. Code 10 is the off-road warning that NHTSA attaches to every side-by-side and ATV, because those machines are not certified for road use. It is normal and does not mean the number is fake.
Polaris uses several prefixes. 4XA turns up on many US-built off-road models, 3NS on others such as the Ranger and RZR S 4 examples below, 57X on the Slingshot and SN1 on recent snowmobiles. A machine sold as a Polaris that starts with something unrelated deserves a closer look at the title and frame stamp. For the general rules behind each block, read our guide on how to read a VIN.
Which Polaris model does my VIN show?
Positions 4 and 5 hold the Polaris model family, and positions 6 to 8 add the engine. That means two characters are enough to tell a RZR from a Ranger, a General or a Sportsman. vPIC returns the exact model name only when the full pattern matches a Polaris filing, so a blank model field usually means a typo.
We tested model-year 2023 patterns against vPIC. These pairs came back with a model name:
| Positions 4-5 | Family | Model in vPIC |
|---|---|---|
NA | RZR | RZR XP 1000 |
N4 | RZR | RZR XP 4 1000 |
A4 | RZR | RZR S 4 1000 |
RR | Ranger | Ranger XP 1000 EPS |
RS | Ranger | Ranger Crew XP 1000 EPS |
GA | General | General 1000 Sport |
SE | Sportsman | Sportsman 570 EPS |
SX | Sportsman | Sportsman 850 EPS (with engine E85) |
BB | Pro XD | Pro XD |
Three of our full decodes show the engine block at work. 3NSRRE993PA100001 returned a 2023 Ranger XP 1000 EPS with a 999 cc engine. 3NSA4E999PA100001 returned a 2023 RZR S 4 1000 EPS, also 999 cc. 4XASEE576PA100001 returned a 2023 Sportsman 570 EPS with a 567 cc single. If you are comparing quads from several brands, our ATV VIN decoder guide covers the other makers.
Slingshot VINs
The Slingshot uses its own layout. In the Polaris filing with NHTSA (letter dated July 22, 2025), position 4 A means three wheels with two at the front, position 6 is the trim (T S, P SL, R R), position 7 G is the 1997 cc manual and position 8 is the power rating (B 204 hp, D 180 hp). 57XAATHD8T8100001 decoded clean as a 2026 Slingshot S, 1997 cc, built in Huntsville, Alabama. vPIC shows the make as Slingshot, not Polaris, which is worth knowing when a title or insurance form asks for the make.
Snowmobile VINs
Polaris snowmobiles follow the same 17-character format with different meanings. Position 4 is the chassis, position 5 the track length and position 6 the package. SN1TJE8P8R2100001 decoded as a 2024 Matryx with a 155 to 156 inch track and the Adventure package, built in Spirit Lake, Iowa.
How do you check the 9th digit on a Polaris VIN?
The ninth character is a check digit worked out from the other sixteen. Convert each letter to a number, multiply each character by its position weight, add the results and divide by 11. The remainder must match position 9, and a remainder of 10 is written as X. A mismatch means a character was copied wrongly.
Here is the full calculation for 4XANAE990PA100001. Under 49 CFR Part 565, letters convert to numbers (A=1, E=5, N=5, P=7, X=7) and the weights for positions 1 to 17 are 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 10, 0, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
| Character | 4 | X | A | N | A | E | 9 | 9 | 0 | P | A | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Value | 4 | 7 | 1 | 5 | 1 | 5 | 9 | 9 | – | 7 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Weight | 8 | 7 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 10 | 0 | 9 | 8 | 7 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 |
32 + 49 + 6 + 25 + 4 + 15 + 18 + 90 + 63 + 8 + 7 + 2 = 319
319 ÷ 11 = 29, remainder 0, so position 9 must be 0, and it is.
This check is useful on muddy frames. Polaris VINs are often read off a stamp inside a wheel well, where a B can look like an 8 and an S like a 5. If the decoder reports a bad check digit, clean the stamp and read it again before you assume anything worse.
Where is the VIN on a Polaris RZR, Ranger, ATV or Slingshot?
Polaris stamps the VIN into the frame, usually inside a wheel well on the left side. Most RZR models have it in the left rear wheel well, as do most Ranger models from 2015 onward. ATVs vary by model. The Slingshot has a label on the driver-side frame and a second stamp near the base of the windshield.
| Vehicle | Where Polaris says to look |
|---|---|
| RZR (most models) | Frame in the left rear wheel well |
| RZR 170 youth | Left front wheel well |
| Ranger, most 2015 and newer | Left rear wheel well |
| Ranger, 2003 to 2014 | Left front wheel well, with some exceptions |
| ATVs, 1998 to 2010 | Frame in the front left wheel well |
| Sportsman 570 and similar | Left rear frame rail |
| Slingshot | Label on the driver-side frame, plus a frame stamp where the hood meets the area in front of the steering wheel |
The VIN is also printed on the title or registration. Compare the frame stamp with the paperwork before you pay for a used machine. On a side-by-side that has been rebuilt, also look for a stamp that has been ground, welded over or restamped by hand.
Does a Polaris VIN show the factory and recalls?
Yes. Position 11 is the plant code, and the full VIN is what Polaris and safety regulators use to match recalls. Off-road Polaris recalls go through the Consumer Product Safety Commission rather than NHTSA. The official Polaris VIN search shows the model, warranty status and open bulletins for one machine.
Plant letters we saw in vPIC decodes:
| Position 11 | Plant |
|---|---|
A, B, P | Roseau, Minnesota |
8 | Huntsville, Alabama (named in the Slingshot filing) |
2 | Spirit Lake, Iowa |
C | Roseau, Minnesota (snowmobiles) |
S | Shanghai, China |
Recalls are where the VIN pays off. On May 18, 2023, CPSC announced recall 23-760 for about 20,330 RZR Pro XP 4 (model years 2021 to 2023) and RZR Turbo R 4 (model years 2022 to 2023) vehicles because of a possible fuel leak at the fuel pump joint. The notice tells owners to enter their VIN on the Polaris website to see whether their machine is included. A seller who says a machine has "no recalls" should be able to show you that search result.
If you also ride a Can-Am, its prefixes and model codes work differently; see our Can-Am VIN decoder. For Honda's street bikes and ATVs, see the Honda motorcycle VIN decoder.
Decode your Polaris VIN
Copy all 17 characters from the frame stamp, not from an ad, and run them through the VIN decoder. Check that the year, model family and plant match what the seller described, then enter the same VIN in the Polaris VIN search to look for open bulletins. For other brands and older bikes, start from our motorcycle VIN decoder guide.
Frequently asked questions
How do I decode a Polaris VIN?
Enter all 17 characters into a decoder that reads NHTSA vPIC data. The first three identify Polaris, positions 4 and 5 give the model family (NA is a RZR XP 1000, RR a Ranger XP 1000), positions 6 to 8 the engine, position 10 the model year and position 11 the plant.
What year is my Polaris by VIN?
Read position 10. P is 2023, R is 2024, S is 2025 and T is 2026. Polaris used 17-character VINs from 1997 on, so older machines have a shorter 7-digit number that a standard decoder cannot read.
Where is the VIN on a Polaris RZR?
Polaris says most RZR models have the VIN stamped on the frame in the left rear wheel well. Youth RZR 170 models carry it in the left front wheel well.
Can I check a Polaris for recalls by VIN?
Yes. Off-road Polaris recalls are announced through the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the recall notice tells owners to check their VIN on the Polaris website. The Polaris VIN search also lists open bulletins for the vehicle.
Does a Slingshot VIN decode as Polaris?
In our October 2026 vPIC decodes, 2026 Slingshot VINs starting 57X returned the make Slingshot, the manufacturer Polaris Industries and the plant in Huntsville, Alabama.
