Honda Motorcycle VIN Decoder: Bikes, ATVs and Old Frames

Decode a Honda motorcycle, ATV or Pioneer VIN with real NHTSA results. Match frame code to engine number, read year and plant, handle pre-1981 frames.

A Honda motorcycle VIN decoder reads the 17-character number on the frame and returns the model, model year, engine size and factory. Honda builds that model information straight into positions 4 to 8, so JH2SC8716SK000001 decodes as a 2025 Rebel 1100 from the Kumamoto factory in Japan.

Every result here comes from NHTSA's vPIC database (data checked October 2026), cross-checked against American Honda's own VIN filing for the 2025 model year. Use our free VIN decoder to run your own number.

Which Honda prefix is on my motorcycle?

The first three characters show which Honda company built the vehicle. JH2 is Honda Motor Co. in Japan, used on bigger bikes like the Rebel 1100, Africa Twin and CRF450RL. MLH is Thai Honda, used on the Grom, Monkey, CB300R and the 500 twins. Honda ATVs and Pioneer side-by-sides use 1HF, American Honda's US prefix.

vPIC lists more Honda prefixes from Spain, Belgium, Brazil, Vietnam and China. Most of these are for bikes sold outside the US. If a Honda on a US title starts with one of them, it may be a private import. Our motorcycle VIN decoder guide explains what to check on imported bikes.

What does the Honda frame code in the VIN tell you?

Positions 4 to 8 of a Honda motorcycle VIN are the frame code from Honda's filing. The first four characters name the platform, such as SC87 for the Rebel 1100, and the fifth picks the version. The same platform code usually starts the engine number, so you can check the engine belongs to the frame.

Honda's 2025 filing lists the VIN code and the engine code next to each other. Here are four of them:

ModelVIN positions 4-8Engine number startsDisplacement and power
Rebel 1100SC871SC87E1084 cc twin, 91 hp
CBR500RPC705PC70E471 cc twin, 50 hp
GromJC921JC92E124 cc single, 9.7 hp
Africa TwinSD151SD13E1084 cc twin, 99 hp

That is a quick used-bike check. Read the frame VIN, then the engine number on the crankcase, and compare the first four characters. A Rebel 1100 with an engine starting SC87E is consistent. One with an engine code from another platform has had its engine changed, which is not always a problem but is something to ask about.

There are exceptions, so do not treat a mismatch as proof. The Africa Twin's VIN code is SD151, but its engine code is SD13E. The Dax125 frame is JB065 and its engine is JB04E. When the codes differ, check the filing or ask a dealer before you assume the worst.

Two vPIC quirks are worth knowing. The CRF450RL returns the model CRF450R with the series CRF450RL. The Rebel 1100 decodes with 1 cylinder, even though Honda's filing lists 2. The model name and displacement are right in both cases, so go by the filing for anything vPIC gets wrong.

How do you decode a Honda ATV or Pioneer VIN?

Honda ATVs and side-by-sides use the 1HF prefix. Positions 4 and 5 read TE on the ATVs we tested and VE on the Pioneer and Talon side-by-sides, and positions 6 to 8 pick the model. vPIC returned the model and engine size for each pattern but did not name a plant.

The full Pioneer VIN, 1HFVE0424NA100001, came back as a 2022 Pioneer 1000 Deluxe with error codes 0, 10 and 14. Code 10 is the usual off-road warning. Code 14 means vPIC could not decode every character, here the plant. The model, year and engine are still reliable. For more on quads from other brands, read the ATV VIN decoder guide.

How do you check a Honda VIN by hand?

Use the check digit in position 9. Under 49 CFR Part 565, convert each letter to a number, multiply by the weight for its position, add everything and divide by 11. The remainder must equal position 9, with 10 written as X. If it does not, one of the characters was misread.

Worked example, JH2SC8716SK000001. Letter values are J=1, H=8, S=2, C=3 and K=2.

8 + 56 + 12 + 10 + 12 + 24 + 14 + 10 + 18 + 16 + 2 = 182

182 ÷ 11 = 16, remainder 6. Position 9 is 6, so the VIN is consistent.

Honda's filing uses the standard year letters: N is 2022, P 2023, R 2024, S 2025, T 2026 and V 2027. The VIN year chart has the full table, including the 30-year repeat.

What if my Honda is older than 1981?

Hondas built before the 1981 model year do not have a 17-character VIN. They carry a shorter frame number made of a model prefix and a serial, stamped on the steering neck. A standard decoder cannot read it, so identify the bike from the prefix, the engine number and the title instead.

NHTSA made the fixed 17-character format mandatory from the 1981 model year. Before that, each maker used its own system. On older Hondas the frame number is typically a model prefix followed by a serial, and the engine number carries its own prefix. Ask a dealer or owners' club whether the two prefixes belong to the same model.

For a vintage Honda, rely on three things together:

  1. The frame number on the steering neck and the engine number on the crankcase.
  2. The number on the title, which must match the frame exactly.
  3. A Honda dealer or a model-specific owners' club, which can confirm the model and often the production year from the serial range.

Honda says every US Honda powersports product has its 17-digit code stamped on the frame, and that the VIN also appears on the sales agreement, insurance card and registration. On a pre-1981 bike, the title shows the frame number instead, and it is just as important that it matches.

Decode your Honda

Read the VIN from the frame, decode it, then compare the frame code with the engine number. If both line up and the year matches the listing, you can move on to condition and history. For other makes, see the KTM VIN decoder, the Suzuki motorcycle VIN decoder and the Polaris VIN decoder.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decode a Honda motorcycle VIN?

Enter the 17 characters in a decoder that reads NHTSA vPIC data. JH2 means Honda Motor Co. in Japan and MLH means Thai Honda. Positions 4 to 8 hold Honda's frame code, such as SC871 for a Rebel 1100, position 10 is the model year and position 11 the plant, K for Kumamoto or 5 for Bangkok.

What year is my Honda motorcycle by VIN?

Read position 10. Honda's filing lists R as 2024, S as 2025, T as 2026 and V as 2027. Earlier letters follow the same table, so N is 2022 and P is 2023.

Where is the VIN on a Honda motorcycle?

Honda says the 17-digit code is stamped on the frame of every US Honda powersports product. On street bikes, look at the steering head. The VIN also appears on the sales agreement, insurance card and state registration.

Should the Honda engine number match the VIN?

Not character for character, but the codes usually line up. In Honda's 2025 filing, a Rebel 1100 has frame code SC871 and engine code SC87E. A different engine code can mean a swapped engine, though some models, like the Africa Twin, use a different code by design.

Can I decode a Honda made before 1981?

Not with a standard VIN decoder. The 17-character format became mandatory with the 1981 model year, so older Hondas carry a shorter frame number. Use the model prefix on the frame and the title, and confirm with a Honda dealer or a model-specific club register.
