BMW VIN Decoder: BMW VIN Number Breakdown by Position

BMW VIN decoder guide: what each of the 17 characters means, BMW WMI codes, plant codes such as Spartanburg, and why option codes are not in the VIN itself.

A BMW VIN decoder reads the 17 characters of a BMW's VIN in fixed groups: the first three name the manufacturer, positions 4–8 hold BMW's model code, the 9th is a check digit, the 10th is the model year, the 11th is the assembly plant and the last six are the serial number. Decode those and you know the model, body style, drive type, year and the factory that built the car.

What a BMW VIN does not hold is the option list. Decoding the VIN does not give you a full list of packages, paint or upholstery.

This guide covers US-market BMWs. The WMI list, model codes and plant codes come from NHTSA's vPIC database, which we queried in October 2026. To decode one car right now, paste its VIN into our free VIN decoder.

BMW VIN number breakdown at a glance

Here is a sample 2019 X5 VIN pattern, 5UXCR6C5_KL plus a serial, split into its parts:

PositionsExampleWhat it means on a BMW
1–35UXWorld Manufacturer Identifier (WMI): BMW Manufacturing, US, multipurpose vehicle
4–7CR6CModel code: X5 xDrive40i
85Rest of the vehicle descriptor section
9variesCheck digit
10KModel year 2019
11LPlant: Greer, South Carolina (Plant Spartanburg)
12–17variesProduction serial number

The layout comes from federal law, not from BMW. Under 49 CFR 565.15, vehicles covered by Part 565 use the same sections. For a passenger car, positions 4–8 must describe the make, line, series, body type, engine type and restraint devices, and the 11th character must be the plant. Each maker chooses its own codes inside that frame. Our guide on how to read a VIN covers the general rules.

Positions 1–3: BMW WMI codes

The first three characters tell you who built the vehicle and what type it is. These are the BMW WMIs that vPIC returned when we queried it:

WMIManufacturer in vPICVehicle type
WBABMW AG, GermanyPassenger car
WBSBMW M GmbH, GermanyPassenger car (M models)
WBXBMW AG, GermanyMultipurpose vehicle (SAV)
WBYBMW AG, GermanyPassenger car (i models such as the i3 and i4)
WB5BMW AG, GermanyMultipurpose vehicle (for example the iX)
3MWBMW AGPassenger car (Mexico-built 3 Series)
4USBMW Manufacturing Corp., USAPassenger car
5UXBMW Manufacturing Corp., USAMultipurpose vehicle
5YMBMW Manufacturing Corp., USAMultipurpose vehicle (M SAVs)
WB1, WB3, WB4BMW AG Motorcycles, GermanyMotorcycle

A W first character points to Germany, 4 and 5 to the US and 3 to Mexico. So 5UX marks a BMW SAV from BMW Manufacturing in the US and WBA a BMW AG car, but always confirm the plant with the 11th character.

vPIC also lists WMW and WMZ under BMW AG, but those decode as MINI, not BMW. WZ1 is listed under BMW AG too and decodes as a Toyota Supra. If a "BMW" carries one of those prefixes, it is a different make.

Positions 4–8: the model code

BMW uses positions 4–7 as a compact model code. Change one character and the model changes. We decoded VINs built on real BMW patterns through vPIC and recorded what it returned:

Positions 1–7YearvPIC model and seriesBody class
WBA5R1C2019330i, 3 SeriesSedan

5UXCR6C2019X5 xDrive40iSUV/MPV
5YMKT6C2015X5 MSUV/MPV
WB523CF2022iX xDrive50iSUV/MPV

Two things stand out. First, the 6th character on the 2019 3 Series separates the rear-drive and xDrive versions: 5R1C against 5R7C. Second, BMW changed its coding style over time. Older patterns such as 5UXCR6C end in C, while newer ones such as 5UX53DP and WBA53BJ follow a different layout. Federal rules require the 7th character to be a letter on 2010-and-later light vehicles, and every pattern above follows that rule.

The 8th character finishes the descriptor section. In our tests on a 2019 X5 xDrive40i pattern (5UXCR6C36KL000001 and 5UXCR6C54KL000001), the two position-8 values vPIC accepted returned the same model, so we do not assign it a meaning here. Read the whole 4–8 block with the model year rather than trying to decode one character on its own.

If you shop across German brands, the logic is similar but the codes are not. Our Mercedes VIN decoder guide walks through Mercedes-Benz's own patterns.

Positions 9 and 10: check digit and model year

The 9th character is a check digit. It is calculated from the other 16 characters with a fixed formula in 49 CFR 565.15, so most typos make it fail. vPIC flags a VIN whose check digit is wrong, which is the fastest way to catch a mistyped or altered BMW VIN.

The 10th character is the model year: K is 2019, L 2020, M 2021, N 2022, P 2023, R 2024, S 2025 and T 2026. The model year is not always the build year. The model year can differ from the calendar year the car was built.

Position 11: BMW plant codes

The 11th character is the assembly plant. These are the codes vPIC decodes for BMW VINs:

11th characterPlant city in vPICCountry
L, 0, 9Greer, South CarolinaUSA
8San Luis PotosíMexico
A, F, KMunichGermany
B, C, D, GDingolfingGermany
5, E, J, PRegensburgGermany
7, VLeipzigGermany
WGrazAustria
NRosslynSouth Africa

The examples we tested in vPIC, from a 2015 535i to a 2022 X3, decoded to these plant locations.

The US plant is BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Its official address is in Greer, South Carolina, which is why vPIC says "Greer." BMW Group says the plant builds the X3, X5, X6, X7 and XM and their variants. That matches what vPIC shows: our 2018 X3, 2019 X5 and 2015 X5 M patterns all decoded to Greer with an L in the 11th position.

Positions 12–17 and the "last 7"

The last six characters are the production serial number. Under the federal rule, the last five characters of a car or light SAV VIN must be numeric.

BMW dealers, parts catalogs and owner forums often identify a car by its last seven characters: the plant letter in position 11 plus the six-character serial. Some BMW systems accept those seven characters, but federal uniqueness applies to the full VIN. For anything official, though, such as a recall lookup or a title check, always use the full 17 characters. BMW's own recall and owner's manual tools ask for the full 17-character VIN.

BMW option codes and build sheet by VIN

This is where most BMW VIN searches end up. People want the build sheet: every factory option, package, paint and upholstery code. None of that is encoded in the VIN. Federal rules only require positions 4–8 to describe things like line, series, body type, engine type and restraints. Options, packages and colors are not on that list.

BMW owners often call factory option codes SA codes. To find out what a car left the factory with:

  • Ask a BMW center whether it can provide the factory equipment information for that VIN.
  • Find the original window sticker. The Monroney label lists the factory options and price. Our guide to the window sticker by VIN explains how to recover one.
  • Use BMW's owner tools. If you own the car, the My BMW App shows the VIN and vehicle information, and BMW's Digital Owner's Manuals lookup uses the 17-character VIN to find the digital manual for your car.
  • Paint color. The paint code is not in the VIN either. See our paint code by VIN guide for where to find it on the car.

Be careful with third-party "BMW build sheet" sites. Some show real option data, others show generic equipment for the model. A BMW center's printout is the one to trust when money is on the line.

BMW motorcycle VINs

BMW Motorrad bikes follow the same 17-character layout. vPIC lists WB1, WB3 and WB4 for BMW AG Motorcycles in Germany. A full 2019 test VIN, WB10J1308KZ000001, decoded in vPIC as an R nineT (series K22), built in Berlin. The model and plant codes are different from the car codes above, so do not use the car tables for a bike. Our motorcycle VIN decoder guide covers BMW and other brands.

How to decode a BMW VIN, step by step

  1. Read the VIN from the car. BMW USA lists four places: behind the windshield, the nameplates on the right and left sides of the vehicle, and an engraving on the right-hand side of the engine compartment. Our VIN location guide shows the common spots on any car. Make sure they all match.
  2. Check the first three characters against the WMI table. A 5UX X5 should not say "Made in Germany."
  3. Run the full VIN through a decoder. Our free VIN decoder reads NHTSA vPIC data and returns the model, series, body, drive, engine and plant. Our guide to the NHTSA VIN decoder explains what vPIC can and cannot tell you.
  4. Confirm the year and plant. The 10th and 11th characters should match the listing and the door-jamb label.
  5. Get the option list from BMW, through a BMW center or the original window sticker, if packages matter to the price.
  6. Check recalls. Enter the VIN at BMW USA's recall lookup, which shows open safety and emission recalls for that vehicle. BMW notes that recalls issued before 1999 are not included.

If the VIN on the windshield, door-jamb label and title do not agree, stop and find out why before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decode a BMW VIN?

Split it into sections. Positions 1–3 are the manufacturer code (such as WBA or 5UX), 4–8 are the model code, 9 is the check digit, 10 is the model year, 11 is the plant and 12–17 are the serial number. A free decoder that reads NHTSA's vPIC data returns the model, body, drive type and plant in one step.

Can I get BMW option codes from the VIN?

Not from the VIN characters themselves. Federal rules require the VIN to describe things like model, body, engine type and restraints; they do not make it an options list. Ask a BMW center whether it can provide the factory equipment for a specific car, and check the original window sticker, which lists the options.

Which BMWs have a VIN starting with 5UX?

5UX is assigned to BMW multipurpose vehicles (SAVs). In NHTSA vPIC, 5UX X3 and X5 VINs with plant code L in position 11 decode to Greer, South Carolina, home of BMW's Plant Spartanburg.

What does the 11th digit of a BMW VIN mean?

It is the assembly plant. In NHTSA vPIC, L, 0 or 9 decodes as Greer, South Carolina, 8 as San Luis Potosí in Mexico, A, F or K as Munich, B, C, D or G as Dingolfing, 5, E, J or P as Regensburg, 7 or V as Leipzig and W as Graz, Austria.

Where is the VIN on a BMW?

BMW USA lists four places: behind the windshield, on the nameplates on the right and left sides of the vehicle, and engraved on the right-hand side of the engine compartment. The My BMW App also shows it under Vehicle, then Vehicle Information.
