VW Golf MOT Pass Rate: How It Compares, From 815,000 2024 Tests
Volkswagen Golf MOT pass rate by age and year, petrol vs diesel at the same age, and the most common Golf MOT failures, from every 2024 DVSA test.
The Volkswagen Golf was the fourth most-tested car in Great Britain in 2024, with 815,026 first-attempt MOTs in DVSA's published test data. Of the four most-tested models, it was the only one to beat the average pass rate, and it did that with a fleet older than average.
VW Golf MOT Pass Rate in 2024
Of the Golfs tested, 73.0% passed first time, 4.6% failed but were fixed at the test centre the same day, and 22.3% failed. The median Golf at its test was ten years old, a year older than the average car, so its real advantage is bigger than the headline figures suggest. 8.1% of Golf tests recorded at least one dangerous defect, close to the 7.8% average.
Golf Pass Rate by Age and Year
| Age at test | Golf | All cars |
|---|---|---|
| 3 years | 91.6% | 87.3% |
| 5 years | 87.5% | 83.3% |
| 7 years | 85.2% | 78.0% |
| 9 years | 80.8% | 71.4% |
| 11 years | 72.0% | 65.4% |
| 13 years | 63.3% | 60.6% |
| 15 years | 60.5% | 57.5% |
| 18 years | 54.4% | 56.3% |
The lead is widest between seven and ten years old. By first-registration year:
| First registered | First MOTs in 2024 | Passed first time | Median mileage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2005 | 19,617 | 54.4% | 126,195 |
| 2008 | 40,046 | 59.6% | 124,493 |
| 2010 | 44,690 | 62.4% | 113,218 |
| 2012 | 51,918 | 68.4% | 97,986 |
| 2013 | 55,024 | 76.2% | 90,154 |
| 2014 | 64,066 | 79.4% | 82,933 |
| 2016 | 65,228 | 85.0% | 63,962 |
| 2017 | 70,012 | 85.7% | 55,699 |
| 2018 | 61,752 | 87.0% | 47,382 |
| 2019 | 48,299 | 88.6% | 38,577 |
Two things stand out. First, the jump from 68.4% for 2012 cars to 76.2% for 2013 cars. The seventh-generation Golf arrived in the UK around the start of 2013, which may account for some of it; the data doesn't record generation, so we can't confirm that.
Second, mileage. Older Golfs have covered far more than the average car: 2005 Golfs had a median of 126,195 miles, while the median for all cars peaks at about 106,000. Many of those are diesels, which tend to be bought for long-distance driving.
Petrol vs Diesel vs Hybrid
| Fuel | First MOTs | Passed first time (all ages) | Passed first time (8 to 12 years) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diesel | 415,489 | 69.8% | 74.3% |
| Petrol | 389,357 | 76.1% | 80.8% |
| Hybrid | 9,357 | 84.9% | 82.2% |
Diesels make up just over half of Golfs tested, and they're older on average (median eleven years against nine for petrol). That explains part of the overall gap, but not all of it. At the same age, petrol Golfs still passed 6.5 points more often. Higher mileage on diesels is the likely reason, as it wears suspension, brakes and tyres faster.
The hybrid figures cover only a few thousand cars, and only 2,094 in the eight-to-twelve group, so treat them as a rough guide.
Most Common Golf MOT Failures
| Failure | Golf tests | All cars |
|---|---|---|
| Coil spring fractured or seriously weakened | 2.70% | 2.07% |
| Tyre tread depth below 1.6 mm | 2.53% | 2.43% |
| CV joint boot split or missing | 2.04% | 1.37% |
| Brake pads worn below 1.5 mm | 1.99% | 1.90% |
| Engine malfunction indicator lamp | 1.93% | 1.51% |
| Tyre ply or cords exposed | 1.79% | 1.38% |
| Shock absorber leaking or damaged | 1.74% | |
| Suspension linkage dust cover damaged | 1.72% | |
| Brakes binding | 1.50% | |
| Parking brake efficiency below requirement | 1.40% | |
| Position lamp (sidelight) not working | 1.34% | 2.50% |
| Tyre cut to the ply | 1.32% | 1.36% |
The Golf's failures lean towards wear items: springs, tyres, CV boots and brakes. That fits a car that covers a lot of miles. Lamp failures are much less common than average, appearing on 8.9% of Golf tests against 10.9% for all cars. Suspension (9.6%) was the most common failure group, followed by lamps (8.9%), brakes (7.0%) and tyres (6.9%).
Buying a Used Golf
Because older Golfs often carry high mileage, check the recorded mileage history on the GOV.UK MOT history check. It should rise steadily between tests. A reading that drops, or a long gap, is worth asking about. Repeated advisories for springs, shock absorbers or brakes suggest work due soon.
Then check that the VIN on the car matches the V5C logbook; our guide shows where to find the VIN. For how the Golf compares with other popular cars, see our MOT pass rates by model. Our Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa pages show the opposite pattern: both fall behind the average car as they age.
How We Worked This Out
We used DVSA's 2024 anonymised MOT data: class 4 vehicles, normal first-attempt tests only (no retests). "Passed first time" means a pass with nothing to fix; passes after rectification at the test centre count as not passing first time. Failure items include fails and items rectified at the test centre, not advisories or minor defects. A test that failed on two items is counted under each.
Age is the time from first use to the test date, in whole years. We left out 488,352 tests (1.5% of all tests) whose records appear more than once with conflicting details. Hybrid includes all petrol and diesel hybrids as DVSA records them. The figures describe what happened at tests and can't show the cause of a failure.
Frequently asked questions
Is the VW Golf good at passing MOTs?
Yes, up to about sixteen years old. Golfs passed first time more often than the average car at every age from three to sixteen in 2024, by up to 9.5 points at ten years old. By eighteen years old they were slightly below average.
Do diesel Golfs fail more MOTs than petrol Golfs?
Yes. Comparing cars aged eight to twelve, diesel Golfs passed first time 74.3% of the time and petrol Golfs 80.8%. Diesel Golfs still beat the 68.1% all-car average for a ten-year-old car.
What do Golfs fail their MOT on most?
Broken coil springs (2.7% of tests), worn tyres (2.5%), split CV joint boots (2.0%) and worn brake pads (2.0%).
